The reason fansubs died off is because the official subs are fine. 99% of the time, the only edits to official subs are better typesetting and some minor edits.

There was also the code of honor among fansub groups of old, where they would stop their fansub efforts of shows if they got officially licensed. We get official subs of almost every single seasonal that comes out now. Fansubs were to fill in those gaps and to show that there was demand in the west for anime. They have served their purpose. You also see some of those old fansubbers working at those very companies now.

It's not because of "woke lefties" or "hating source culture" (if anything, that stuff is found in dubs, not subs)

Well ripping is a whole process, sure if you got an already working script given to you by someone and that works, cool, until the day it stops working.
Same thing for accounts, if you're ripping from your own account (dumb imo) it's easy, but if you want to avoid any issue, most rippers will use leaked accounts for that = it takes time and effort to find new ones each time one breaks.
And so on.. Sure using an API is easy, but there's a lot more things to deal with.
