We've had an open comments for over 13 years now.
Comment wars have occurred in the past, several times actually. They all eventually die out.

This is more an ideological view on my part, but whilst there's a few nuisances, I believe most commenters are sensible and don't like the idea of closing things off just because there's a few bad apples.

I take your (and likely many others') point that these can be irritating though, and will look at dissuading such comments.
