This is a preview of my next release of all the R2J Naruto Episodes fixed (1-220) With PCM Japanese audio and Eng audio sync’d.

Video from the R2J DVD
JPN Audio from the R2J DVD
Eng Audio from the R1US DVD
Eng Subs re-timed from the R1US DVD

The R2J Naruto DVDs are atrocious, they need a ton of work done to them to be fixed but i am dedicated to get them done as soon as I can.

De-rainbowed
Reduced Dot Crawl
De-interlaced
Fixed Chroma Shift
Fixed haloing
and more

I included the original untouched R2J remux here in the torrent so you can compare my preview to what it use to look like.

Changes could still be made but wanted to get this out there in case someone has subs already predone that they can send me
since re-timing the subs will take me forever on top of having to sync the R1US audio which is not a quick job which requires cuts.

Thanks for your work. Also, do you know if there is a difference in video quality between R2J and R1US? I’ve noticed that in some torrent packs, the english dub dvd’s will have different colors than the R2J’s.

Also, what are your thoughts on [SB-RAW]'s encodes?

Black Mist here, thanks for your work man

@boobychan

you are welcome!

R2J has better bitrate and better quality overall including slightly different colors. R1US is a attempted fixed version of R2J but failed horribly. Not to mention some R1US ep’s are actually tv rips.

Ive taken a look at SB-RAWS encodes and im not here to do this is better or this is worse but i will drop a comparison of both later on for you to decide.

My stance on these fixes is to fix as much as i can without damaging details so i will leave some small imperfections for the benefit of better overall quality and so i dont heavily use filters to hard to the point where i introduce artifacts etc. That means NO DNR.

I also dont do 10bit encodes, which i know will be confusing to some. I do not like the 10 bit to 8bit conversion that players do which introduces dithering to the entire image. I prefer to dither when needed in specific colors or spots so i don’t ruin an image completely esp with a clean source like naruto is.
Some say “what about the file size reduction” and i say hard drives are cheap and i wont do anything that compromises quality like unnecessary dither. Not to mention you are downloading this online for free so the cost of these dvds alone would be the amount of a decent sized hard drive. Which could hold even more than what this release will be in terms of size.

Next is audio i will never encode audio unless its a plex formatted release all audio should be left alone or made into flac so audio quality is retained. R2J Naruto comes with PCM audio.

@dbz152 You are welcome!

EDIT I would also like to mention im aware SB-RAWS encode is not 10bit its just a general statement of how i feel about anime encodes.

@JsYzE thanks for the all answers, they were very insightful. I look forward to your release.

I also just found an issue with preview, i accidentally added something to the script before making this torrent and it will be fixed later as it was never intended be part of the script. You can see the issue in this comparison https://imgsli.com/NjgwNg, Naruto’s shirt has a weird white halo on line on his shirt in a few places that was not there on my first export.

Some fair notes: SB-RAW encodes are also 60fps which is odd and has frame blending, blocking, banding, artifacts, not derainbowed, color changed from remux, flickering and jerky panning shots from up and down and side to side, that I was unable to capture since i had to fix it to even compare it side by side.

sameer

so how are you cutting the english audio? Visually or using only your ears?

JySzE

@sameer yes and yes, audacity when comparing sfx with japanese audio, muxing it, testing it visually then validating it.

But the amount of work that goes in im probably going to skip on doing an eng sync for now and focus on just finishing it subbed. Then come back with a v2 later on with eng sync’d if i can find help.

sameer

best of luck

@JySzE
That’s a True Anime Fan

You are actually going to release all 500 Naruto Shippuden Episodes - Dual Audio

Good Luck.

im probably going to skip on doing an eng sync for now and focus on just finishing it subbed

That’s a shame :/ At least it’ll be done eventually. Looks solid. Do you have comparison screens against other releases like Yellow-Flash’s and DarkDream’s etc?

JySzE

@-___-

no need really darkdream is R1 sourced so it s going to inherently look worse do to source, and as for yellow-flash I think I’ve seen some screenshots but dont remember how it compared.

I can post some later when im home.

ThePi7on

@JySzE I noticed that in your fixed preview, while you fixed the outline on the blue part of the jacket, you have more rainbowing on the “after” pic. Is that a direct consequence?
Also are you still working on this?

ThePi7on

I made a comparison with [DarkDream] if anyone is curious https://slow.pics/comparison/8217e203-08ea-4d56-b588-98391225e466

JySzE

@ThePi7on yes that is a consequence of fixing that issue but, i’ve fixed it recently also.

JySzE
ThePi7on

Nice! Thanks for your work, I like the result so far.
Do you think you’ll be able to get rid of that green shift on some of the lineart too? It’s the only source defect I can still see.
But other that that, looks really good to me. Or is there something else you’d like to fix before calling it done?

JySzE

@ThePi7on its actually rainbowing a mixture of red and green, There is no derainbow tool alive that can grab that without throwing chroma all over the frame. Which is a shame, i could try a line darkener but then id end up with something pretty nasty trying to hide it. I will try and find a solution but sometimes il need to sacrifice some stuff like this for overall video detail because to much derainbowing can actually throw off the colors.

Infact im considering dialing back the derainbowing because im noticing a trend where colors are already being affected example:

No Derainbow vs Current Derainbow: https://slow.pics/comparison/df449573-01c4-4a80-ba05-65caf6e627d7

Now your probably thinking ok dial it back a bit then, well then i end up with this:

https://slow.pics/comparison/c3baa8a5-d8cd-42a2-86f6-9c25235889c8

If i dial it back to restore colors i end up with slight rainbowing.

So at this point i need to find a balance between obvious rainbows reduction and color retention. There s no way with this source i can remove all of them.

In the end i think il go with this compromise of rainbows :

https://slow.pics/comparison/75a5c19e-ab0a-4ba9-bbf8-f4b64f1616a4

https://slow.pics/comparison/5ed16901-023b-41d9-ace9-1b6da08f9e88

The new method’s colors are completely the same as the source and most if not all the obnoxious rainbowing is gone.
