Once again we have the best release of an anime come from Dynit, no surprises here. In an ideal world all anime releases would be done at Dynit, and our lives would be much better for it.

8 Different comparisons with the 4K BD and other encoded uploads|More comparisons between just the encodes on der_richter’s website

The 4K BD has bigger framing, but suffers from a pretty bad case of the ol’ DNR. (I mean just look at the background textures, WTF)* I’m also guessing it’s not native 4K, and has been upscaled from a non-UHD source.

*Correction about the 4K version by user HARVEST:

The film is definitely not DNR’d, it was made pure digital and the film may have been recomposited in 4K with the CGI re-rendered in native 4K, while the 2D assets are upscaled to 4K with something similar to an emulator’s filter that just massacres the beauty of pixel art.
Maybe the 4K remaster downscaled to 1080p would undo some of the flaws the remaster did. I do notice the CGI elements look much better in the 4K version.

There are 10 different audio tracks, two of which are “DTS:X” variants, taken from the 4K BD release. DTS:X is basically another object-based surround sound competitor to Atmos that, just like it, maps sounds in a 3D space around you. The “Headphone:X” track is meant to be used with, you guessed it, headphones, which is interesting as headphones are clearly only 2.0 stereo. You’d think it’d be quite hard to do real proper surround sound with just headphones. Despite that though, it somehow calculates where and how far away a sound is coming from, then accordingly adjusts its loudness based on its distance, supposedly giving you a more immersive listening experience. So try 'em out I guess…

Also recommended listening is Mamoru Oshii’s director’s commentary where he gushes over the dog, shit-talks Toshio Suzuki and sometimes talks about the film.

Included in this release as well is the OST album and the “Follow Me” single. The OST album actually has the better version of the song Follow Me, with more dynamic range.

Specifics of this release:

All tracks were retimed to match the ITBD when needed.

that DNR

Bloody hell, it’s as if they wanted to make this film look as bad as the GitS BluRay transfer.

Burn this thing and bury the ashes.

hydes

@type17_RAIDEN, Agreed lol

RoxReaper

da faq is that 4k

ot4ku

wow thanks, I will help seed if I ever get to 100%! Thanks also for the Follow me OST!
Maybe a chance for a Ultimate Edition of the first GitS movie in 4k? Not the 2.0 with the ugly 3D effects.

VanishingVision
VanishingVision

Holy crap, somebody whose obsessive A/V nitpicking actually rivals my own. You’ve immediately become my favorite uploader on here; keep up the great work!

hydes

@VanishingVision, Thanks :D I have fun doing these. I’ve got Redline as the next one to do.

hydes

@ot4ku, I really recommend visiting der_richter’s discord server and looking through the chat logs in #general. You’ll see that richter’s own version trumps the 4K release of the film. The guy reworking the subs for richters’s version is also a professional, so I’m sure it’ll be the best version of the movie.

ot4ku

Thanks, does he offer his releases on IRC or torrent? or just on Discord with DDL or something similar?

hydes

@ot4ku I’m guessing he’ll release it here. You can find his other [Judgment] releases here so I don’t see why he wouldn’t.

Rrobynne

@hydes I’m helping /a/ with a project for more accurate Neon Genesis Evangelion subtitles at the moment, and I know another anon is running some processing on EoE to try and improve its infamously soft focus. If you’re ever thinking of doing one of these Ultimate Editions for Evangelion, might be worth checking out when we’re done with our respective projects. I’ll try to get in touch! There’s also the Sephirotic/Pwnsweet restoration of episode 16 to consider.

hydes

@Rrobynne That’s awesome that you’re reworking the subs for Eva. It’s one of my all time favourites. I’d be happy to do a collected edition with the reworked subs! Although uploading anything 1995 Eva related on here feels like such a daunting thing to me, as Sephirotic’s release is so definitive. Maybe that’s just me though lol.

I think Sephirotic didn’t do too much with EoE encoding wise, so it seems to be free range for anyone to try to improve. If anon ends up being able to make EoE even better, that would be amazing! Are you also redoing the subs for EoE? Sephirotic’s own subs for the film are already pretty damn good from what I’ve seen.

I downloaded the hybrid version of ep16 from Sephirotic’s mega a while back, and yeah it’s really well done. Definitely the best version of the episode.

Nyaa for some reason doesn’t have a DM system, but you can shoot me a message at [email protected] whenever you’ve got an update!

Rrobynne

@hydes Cheers for the email, saved. I wrote a proper reply but it’s too long so I pastebin’d it: https://pastebin.com/XEv9NJ8X

hydes

@Rrobynne I appreciate you doing all that subtitling work. It sounds really time consuming, but I bet the end results will be worth it. Eva is a series that totally deserves this kind of work being done on it. Same thing with that EoE comparison, looks like it’ll be great, especially if they work on the grain and fine-tune the process even more.

Dynit is actually releasing a BD Box of Eva sometime this year (date still unconfirmed). If it’s not a clone of the JP release and they do their usual top tier work on it, it might end up having the best version of EoE at the least, which then could be used for anon’s edited version. Don’t know how far along anon is with the project using the current JP BD though, and if changing the source would mess with the filtering. I doubt Dynit’s release will be massively different though, as it’ll still use the same scan as the JP BD.

I don’t think Gits 1995 has a Dynit BD, and yeah the UHD might be the best version out officially. Even more so if viewed on a good TV with HDR. Still, when he releases it, I do think richter’s version will be superior because of the better source he uses.

Do you mean this shot? There’s definitely a good amount of visible artifacting in richter’s current release, but overall I’d say it’s still better than what is otherwise available. You can check out his comparisons here & UHD comparisons here.

Are they doing a new transfer of Memories? I checked out Discotek’s premiere of the new dub a few days ago, and it was actually surprisingly good for once.

Rrobynne

@hydes I wonder if there’s any link between that new Dynit Eva release rumour and the Region 2 BD release that’s supposed to be coming to the UK this year? + yeah that’s the shot I was talking about. I thought Discotek were doing a new full 4K restoration of Memories, which would presumably include making a new transfer, but I could be wrong. It’s also meant to get a UK theatrical release (1 day probably) with their new dub this year. Actually, I assume if it was that recent, whatever you saw will probably be what they’re releasing.
@idoman Good spot.

hydes

@Rrobynne, I read that hopes for the Dynit box were rekindled after the announcement of the UK release and then Dynit confirmed it themselves last year.

Iirc Discotek’s people said in the livestream that it won’t be 4k but I could be wrong. Guess we’ll have to wait and see…

@idoman, Wasn’t aware of that Dynit release, might have to check out!

Johnster

This is a great release, however, wouldn’t it be better to leave the DTS:X and Headphone:X tracks untouched? Maybe I am wrong, but it is my understanding that FLAC cannot account for the object-based location the way those new formats do, meaning that during conversion a significant part of the information is lost.

hydes

@Johnster, I looked into it and you are totally right, my bad. I wasn’t aware that converting to FLAC would lose the additional data. I’ll put up a DDL for the untouched tracks asap!

Johnster

@hydes

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, it appears that DTS:X and Dolby Atmos really should never be converted.

I also seem to recall that, if possible, DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD shouldn’t be converted either, because not all encoders keep the correct bit-depth. In addition, while FLAC can in itself losslessly transcode the full track and with better compression, the DTS and AC3 cores will be lost, which is bad for backwards compatibility.

HARVEST

There is a 4K remastered Innocence 2K Blu-ray.
I haven’t seen any screenshots or rips of it, though.

The only other possibility was that this was a heavily DNR’d 35mm scan just like Tokyo Godfathers, but that’s unlikely since the film looks too clean even for DNR’d film standards and there isn’t any gate weave. Plus the CGI still looks like native 4K and not blown-up 720p. And it would still be a step back since the older Blu-rays were pure digital sources.
Studio Ghibli mastered this film and they are known for using pure digital sources, just filtering them to look like analogue film if they made it.

hydes

@HARVEST Thank you for the great info! I’ll update the description with your insights.

I think the film was produced at somewhere around 720-800p (don’t quote me on that though, can’t remember where I read it), so to upscale 2d animation from such a low resolution all the way up to 4k without it looking bad must be truly hard for any program or person to accomplish.

vikrant9760
vikrant9760

@hydes can you please also do the first film?

hydes

@vikrant9760 der_richter has been working on his 3.0 version of the first Gits movie, and it’s all done except for the subs which should also be getting close to done. You can join his Discord server to try to see how the project is going.
