This space intentionally left blank. This whole preview is centered around the idea that playing “rock-paper-scissors” sounds juvenile when you do it out loud. Of course, it doesn’t sound juvenile at all in English, so the joke is incomprehensible if you translate it literally. And of course, that’s exactly what the Aniplex subs did. This is just another example of these previews and the commentary tracks being practically impossible to translate fully. Seriously, half the reason Bakemonogatari is an utterly painful project is that we have to try to think of pun translations from scratch like 10 times per episode. And did you know that there are like 600 dialogue lines per commentary? An average episode of anime has more like 400. There’s a reason no one tried to fully tackle Bake until recently. Christ.
