Did you check out UTW? iirc they got blue for this |
| motbob |
Thanks for the comment. I checked out their release, and it’s great. I’ll use it for 03 (which is as far as they subbed). |

https://web.archive.org/web/20120511145554/http://8ths.in/nisemonogatari-ep1-tl-notes-observations/ https://www.crymore.net/tag/nisemonogatari/ this is also useful. You can probably use this stuff too, although (mostly) for the batch. You can also give CMS’s subs a chance if you can find a seeded release of their batch. Seems like they edited the CR translation just like Commie. |
| motbob |
Generally speaking, Dark_Sage’s proposed changes are good half the time and extremely misguided the other half. |
| Interruptor |
This is why you have agency and can decide whether what he proposed is good or not. |
| WitchyMary |
@Interruptor Coalgirls is CMS with bd fixes so bob already got them |
| Interruptor |
Thanks, I thought coalgirls modified commie instead of CSM |
| govna |
no kristen hated commie until one day they read on 4chan that the subs were good actually |
| motbob |
Coalgirls had an interest in pretending Commie was the worst choice, since using Commie’s subs meant getting hit with the dreaded Remake status under old nyaa rules. So they had to go with another option and justify that choice. Of course, that has nothing to do with Nise, where Commie was only a bit better (if at all) than CR/CMS. |
| Interruptor |
8thsin thought that Commie had better typesetting and slightly better editing (with comparable translation accuracy) whereas Dark_Sage said that CMS had worse typesetting and considerably better editing. |
| govna |
was red even a thing then |

can’t believe people still cite 8thsin after he thought the official subs for utena were extremely good when they’re actually full of TL errors. dude was a hack. |
| motbob |
8thsin did the gg mawaru penguindrum subs, so he can’t be a hack. |
| Interruptor |
Herkz is just mad with him because he criticized some commie’s releases. That being said, I am sure 8thsin also got some stuff wrong (I didn’t find anything about Utena on his site though, perhaps he just reviewed the first episode). |
| herkz |
no, i don’t think you understand. this is what he said about the official subs for utena.
but they contain numerous simple TL errors with tons of lost details and nuance. i cannot stress how wrong he is. |
| motbob |
I’m just saying that just because you’re wrong once doesn’t mean you’re a hack. I’m not really trying to defend 8thsin’s fansub evaluations or anything. In the first place, I don’t really put any stock into what other people say about the quality of different releases. Comparing releases is notoriously hard, especially if they are different OTLs. Unless the differences are super drastic (i.e. one release has broken English, or Release A is just Release B edited to be more weeby), you can’t compare releases with a diff, since that leaves out important aspects like CPS. (For example, I wasn’t happy with PAS’s edits of Sentai’s MiA 1-4 when I looked at a diff, but a lot of those edits were important for CPS reasons.) The only comparisons someone should trust are when someone makes a full streamable of each release’s version of a particular scene. Yes, this means that people shouldn’t take my word for it when I say that officialsubs are better than GJM or vice-versa. |
| herkz |
he was probably wrong a lot. that’s just the most egregious example i know of since he gave the subs the highest grade of anything he ever reviewed yet they’re incredibly bad. it’s not like i’m nitpicking some shit he thought was like 8/10 and it’s actually 6/10. this is more like 10/10 versus 3/10. also, i think you can trust what other people say about release X versus release Y if you know them and know they’re qualified to judge it. as for stuff like CPS, i would assume all competent fansubs care about keeping it to reasonable levels. maybe that’s just a bad assumption though since i personally care about it and rarely watch other fansubs. |

Family Mart is actually the name said. Coalgirls won this line. |
| motbob |
My goodness. An English line that’s not the same as the Japanese. I am aghast that my release had something like that. |
| Someone |
Family Mart is a real thing though. It is a direct reference. Why changed it to another real thing which is not related? |
| Gnome |
In Japan.
It is related, as the English equivalent. We call this Translation. |
| user0079 |
It’s not translation though, because “Family Mart” is already an English term, its meaning is clear to any English speaking person. |
| Gnome |
English words =/= common English term. The gag including an extremely common Japanese store doesn’t work in English if it’s referring to something with like 10 stores in America, all in California. The last thing this series needs is pointlessly confusing dialogue, even for a moment. |
| user0079 |
This is “eat the hamburgers, Apollo” tier logic. An audience can be expected to make some obvious inferences and understand that a series isn’t set in America. Additionally, not every English-speaking country has 7-11 stores, so the altered name is no more useful than Family Mart to those viewers. |
| moozooh |
Not every one but most of them, as well as a plenty of non-English-speaking countries. And those that don’t have it generally know of its existence because it’s such a big and widespread chain. Replacing a common term with a more common term of identical connotation at no harm to the meaning of the line is a good and very common trade-off in translation. Conversely, your only defense of the original line is that it’s the original line, which is a notably poor argument as translation is, by definition, a move away from the original. |
| REFERENCE_HERE |
Pretty sure “When you look at me, I can breath” in the EP1 OP should be “breathe.” You have/somebody else has probably already noticed/fixed it, but I figured I might as well. |
| motbob |
Guys… 7-11 was just used to make the stupid rhyme work… |
