So, in the tradition of making Bakemonogatari torrents that are not quite 100% serious, here are some mini encodes, reencoded from Beatrice. Comparisons.

These are AV1 10-bit encodes, so it may be hard for many users to play them without dropping frames. You should be okay if you have a fully updated version of your chosen media player, whether it’s MPC, mpv, or VLC.

The state of AV1 is roughly where it was a year ago: although AV1 is clearly more efficient than HEVC, there is no real way to produce AV1 encodes that have acceptable detail retention in high-motion scenes and dark areas.

These are not the “final” batch subs, though they do have some important changes made to them compared to the volume releases (principally the way the name of the park is handled).

Based release for those who want decent minis. Although I would never download this.

This makes me wonder, is h264 still the prime tool for quality releases? Because from what I gathered both HEVC and AV1 are targeted at efficiency to the point where it’s simply not worth it to use them at low CFR.

Although I vaguely recall one of your posts on reddit where you said that HEVC has the best balance between size and efficiency or something along those lines.

EDIT: I’ll add one thing though. I am amazed at the quality of the compression given the reduction in file size (more than 1/5 of the original video) but your method of doing comparison is not good enough. You said somewhere on Nyaa that you just take 10 random scenes in order to remove the selection bias, and on one hand it’s a good thing, on the other though you are more than likely to reduce the number of dark scenes added in your comparison, which are more important in order to tell if the compression is good enough, to begin with.

I think of mawen and Beatrice being basically tied in terms of picture quality, (mawen better filtering, beatrice larger video) with filesize breaking the tie. So in that light, it seems fine to use Beatrice.
