Episode 4 is the first time I’ve ever given up and put the honorifics in the non-honorifics track.

None of the other ways of dealing with them seemed to work. Commie ignored them / wrote them out of existence, which caused a full 1:10 of video to not make sense, along with two callbacks at 8:52 and 18:22. And all the translations I came up with just made me depressed.

I checked what Vertical did in the LN—exactly the same thing as me. No -chan usage anywhere in the volume until the relevant scene started.

Putting Commie in their place. Good shit Dr. bob!

@motbob Do you have any idea when you will finish releasing Nise? I wanna know to decide wheter or not I wait for it to (finally) publish a Monogatari collection I’m doing. 😅

herkz

pretty sure not using honorifics and then suddenly using them is worse than using them from the start

There’s absolutely no reason for this to be true outside of some sense of aesthetics, and if you’re letting your aesthetics get in the way of an effective translation, you need to reevaluate things.

herkz

if you assume your views can understand the (i assume) complicated nuance involved in this episode regarding honorifics, why not use them all along when they are mostly used in a more pedestrian manner?

nothing to do with aesthetics tbh.

the problem is that everybody’s favorite siscon* araragi always calls her “karen-chan”. if you use a nickname or equivalent translation, you’d either need to use that every time araragi refers to karen (in all of monogatari, not just nise), or you’d need to use it just for that scene. the former solution is obviously not an option, and the latter solution would be just as jarring as the honorifics are, but also probably be extremely cringe inducing (seriously, try to come up with a natural way to refer to someone as lovingly as -chan implies in english). it’s just not worth the effort.

i’d also like to note that herkz doesn’t care for nise and will probably never rewatch it again

*note: probably not really a siscon

If there are two tracks, why not just leave them out in the one without honorifics? I don’t know what the scene in question is all about, but I’d probably be more confused to see honorifics appear all of a sudden than I would in those 70 seconds if I were to miss some cultural subtext or whatnot that is probably not very relevant to the story. I think it’s fair to say that those who prefer to watch their stuff without honorifics are more open to “creative” adaptations and write offs, and you choosing to add honorifics regardless to me comes across as you being overzealous. That aside, thank you for yet another release.

Use something like Kare Bear or SpongeBob Kare Pants. ꉂ (´∀`)ʱªʱªʱª

Things seem to be progressing smoothly, if slow, so not too long I’d say

Just make the honorifics track the first one for this ep.

I honestly couldn’t care less about honorifics, in the sense that leaving them hardly makes a difference to me. That being said, I wonder what this scene is even about. If your viewers know what that specific honorific meant, does it really matter if the subs leave it out? I guess so since it must be some kind of wordplay.

user0079

Should have just left out the honorifics - the viewer can hear them in the spoken dialog, that’s sufficient.

I’d trust Ko Ransom over internet people with no knowledge of the language. If the official translator decided it couldn’t be done without them, I respect his decision and follow suit.

Thanks!

@Interruptor Nise was not translated by Ko Random but James Balzer. Also unsure how much weight I’d put behind the post-Kizu translations given the very tight schedule the translators were given.

Nise and Koyomi are the only ones left if I’m not wrong?

You don’t have audio to fall back on in a book. That said, while I’ve got no horse in this race since I prefer to watch with honorifics tracks when available, I very much understand the pain as someone who also does two sub tracks for the stuff I helm.
