Orphan is really proud to present the first English-subtitled version of the 1988 movie Hi no Ame ga Furu (It Rained Fire), about the firebombing of the city of Fukuoka in June, 1945. Until now, the movie has only been available as terrible rips derived from VHS tapes. This version uses a high-definition scan of a 16mm film reel. The film is grainy, with wear and scratch marks, but it is substantially better than any previous version. See this blog entry for more details.
It Rained Fire forcefully and effectively contrasts the carefree life of the children before the bombing with the relentless terror of the bombing itself.
As the children and other residents discover, in a napalm bomb attack, there is no place of safety.
This movie is not an easy watch, particularly the second half; but it should be watched. The world is forgetting the horrors of total war, and it it needs to be reminded.
