Good points, I didn't think of those.
Lack of recovery is a notable omission in the 7z format, although I do question the necessity of it these days (P2P applications do chunk hashing, transport streams and filesystems support checksumming). Perhaps it seems a little odd for a compression format, as the idea of compression is to remove redundancy whilst error recovery's aim is to increase redundancy. I guess you'd need to use an external application like PAR for this purpose, but I do take your point that integrated support may be nicer for some.

I've generally write scripts for more complex archive creation tasks, but taking a look at WinRAR it seems that it does have some handy ability to do stuff like exclude files or create multiple archives at a time. Isn't a format limitation though, so may be doable by another program. I know there are alternative archivers which compress to 7z, such as PeaZip, but I haven't really tried them so I don't know whether they have the ability to do this.

Good points - thanks for putting them forward.
I personally support 7z as it's free and open, has better compression (with the drawback that the 7-zip application doesn't always adaptively select  optimal compression methods whilst WinRAR does) and can be faster on many core machines as WinRAR can only use 2 threads. The format's support for chained filters is a pretty nice feature too.

I think for .rar file type you can use both 7z and winrar, though winrar could have more features. For .7z file, it is better to use 7-zip.

Honestly, I do not use the function of compressing multiple folders into multiple archives, so i am afraid i can't help you with that. Maybe admin can help u?

erh ... I wanna ask something, 7-zip can't create archives with recovery records or repairing function, and it doesn't have the function to compress multiple folders into multiple archives like WinRAR (it can compress multiple folders into ONE archive, I know that), does it? Purely asking, don't get my intention wrong, I'm not saying which is better than which. Just that I'm kinda fond of the recovery and automated compression functions of WinRar. If there is something like that in 7-zip that I didn't see, please tell me how to get to that, thanks.

I'm not sure what you did, so here's what works for me:
1. Get 7zip from downloads.cnet.com  If you already have 7zip, it has to be version 9.2 or later.
2. Highlight the two files to be joined and extracted
3. Right click on the highlight, choose 7zip Extract Here

That's it.  If it still doesn't work, you may be bumping into the Windows path limit of 255 characters.  In that case, create a temp folder near the root directory, like C:\temp.  Move the files to be joined there, then follow the above procedure.

If that doesn't work, then only Pikachuu can help you!

that sounds good enough as a mirror :) hopefully this highlights the importance of keeping up the support for other hosting links as well (especially mediafire), so that we are not stuck with just one host :)

To report on the limits of Peejeshare:
After two files (1 gig each) it won't let you dl for a bit (maybe 10 minutes) but then lets you get more. There doesn't seem to be a per day limit (or it's over 12gig).
I did encounter the strange "no slots available" error on some files though. It does go away eventually but is a bit concerning.
well at least they got the audio right

Joining the parts is done by 7zip when you open part 1.

You simply need to update to a newer version of 7zip or start using 7zip or another compression program which also joins parts automatically when you unzip

i Download from mediafire but it can't extract the file

If you are using 7zip, be sure you have version 9.2 or later.

Otherwise, if you could describe how you are joining and unwrapping archive.  It seems others have success.

People can just install 7-zip, it extracts the 7z file perfectly without any problems instead of sticking to winRAR. Problem solved.

I don't use Jdownloader,  I use IDM, FDM also works pretty well. If you need to unzip 7z file, feel free to use 7-zip freeware.

For 7z, just use free-ware 7-zip.
It is fast and easy to install and use.
For joining .001 file, pls use hjsplit.

Personally i think the bother is almost negligible.

I tested WinRAR, which seems to extract fine if it's a single archive (ie not split). I believe I have v4.00, so am unsure if v4.20 fixes the problem or not.

RAR is pretty much a no go unfortunately.
I believe the only programs able to create them are WinRAR or the equivalent RAR command line tool. The format doesn't seem to have any open specifications available, and somewhat due to this, I have no idea if it supports stream creation or stuff like delta filters that 7z supports.
Support on non-x86 platforms looks sketchy at best.
7z is pretty much a superior format to RAR in almost every way, and 7-zip is pretty much better than WinRAR in every way that I can think of.

People are probably going to hate me for saying this, but JDownloader really needs to add 7z support. I really don't see any reason why people should be using a closed proprietary format in this day and age.

I don't use JDownloader so I don't know to what extent it supports non-RAR archives. There seems to be some activity regarding 7z, doing a search here though: http://svn.jdownloader.org/search/inde...ues=1&q=7z

If you're not using 7zip 9.20, update and try again.

I can't do anything about the CAPTCHAs unfortunately.
7z wrapping is to see if it helps prevent the account being deleted. I admit it's an inconvenience, but it's probably better that than having lots of dead links.
Stops at 19 - 20 min mark don't download.
1. I can think of only one reason why this isn't working for you: Some versions of Windows have a path-limit of 255 characters.  When it gets near that limit, stuff doesn't work and doesn't generate error messages.  And zip-type programs often create an extra folder within a folder, adding even more characters to the path.  The solution: create a temp folder near the root, like c:\temp.  Move the downloaded parts to c:\temp and do all the joining and unzipping there.  Afterwards, you can move the finished file back to your video library folder(s).

2. If this doesn't work, you could try a different utility like WinZip.   The safest place to get trial versions of such software is downloads.cnet.com

3. Otherwise, if you can try using PeejeShare, listed above.  Where I live, it's even faster than MediaFire.  Another fast service is SendSpace.  I know that performance and availability differ worldwide.  Neither of these two services require joining files.

Lastly, I've heard that only the latest version of 7zip can join these kinds of files, in case you had been using an older version.

WinRar 3.90 fails to extract them but the latest 7-Zip version (9.20) works. So get it if you don't have it http://www.7-zip.org/
I'd prefer if it was Rar packed personally because of the jDownloader issue mentioned above but it looks like 7zip also makes it harder for other people to extract manually as probably not everyone has 7-Zip installed.
Hmm.  Could be broke, but no other comments so far.  If no success, try PeejeShare if you can.  It's even faster than MediaFire where I am.

Giving files randomized names may be a good idea for their longevity. However new style packing creates a slight inconvenience for jDownloader users as it treats the files as simple HJSplit parts but fails to automatically unpack the combined 7zip archive. I think a more popular choice like rar parts (e.g. *.partX.rar) would be more convenient for this as it is fully supported by jDownloader. It could use no compression (as gains for video are too small) or minimum compression (just to avoid bit pattern checks).
