He's not wrong about that though. That's how a lot of BDs of shows from the 90s and 00s are done, unfortunately. Not ALL of them, but a disappointingly high amount. And lots of people blindly assume that if there's a blu-ray, it must be better.

But that does not justify unnecessarily adding on to that shit pile by uploading their own garbage AI upscales. The only reason those BDs are allowed on Nyaa and AB and whatnot is because they are commercially sold.

Very few companies actually give a shit about doing a careful upscale that respects the source material. Discotek + AstroRes is the only such company I can think of. They likely do not see a cost benefit to giving each BD rerelease a good restoration treatment. Slapping a shitty upscale filter on an old DVD-sourced video that makes everything look like a watercolor painting is cheaper.

And the sad reality? Most people probably won't even notice nor care, unless it is something EXTREMELY egregious like the recent Interstella 5555 4k ""remaster""
