Update, I just tried the same test with the .ass files from the attachment section at the top of the animetosho pages. Same issue, only episode 3 plays. So the problem does not lie directly with helpful Timed-for-CR-anon's files.

Same issue here - using the normal vlc add subtitle path - Subtitle>add subtiltle file: Select/open - went through the same process with the 4 ass files. Only episode 3 appears as an option. VLC doesn't recognize the other 3 it seems.

VLC works perfectly fine for everything I run through it. I do have several players but VLC is the main one I use.

Or, even better, ditch VLC altogether and just use mpv or an mpv-based player.
