While Ukraine doesn't have important resources, Russia is the largest country in the world and has a huge amount of valuable resources from oil and gas to uranium, diamond, aluminum and other mineral resources.
The fact is Russia doesn't want NATO on its doorstep and also (some) Russians believe Ukraine is a historical part of Russia and not a sovereign land and hence it should be brought back to Russia just like Crimea.
