According to the manufacturer, AV1 decode is supported at a hardware level. They advertise it on their "leaflet" under the "Documents" tab at the bottom of the product page. Even without hardware AV1 decode support the CPU should be plenty powerful enough to play back AV1. If it's not able to play back any local AV1 file on any player then there may be something wrong or misconfigured with the device firmware or software. There's not much we as consumers can do about it besides flashing a new ROM but that might not even be possible for this particular device.

Boobi, if you're still unable to get any player to work, consider contacting Strong's support on their page here. Their support website is unusable - which is not a good sign. Google has required new Android TV devices since around 2021 to support AV1 decode. You can read more about that here If all else fails, get your money back and try a different device perhaps from a more reputable brand. Even Walmart's 20 USD ONN device supports it.

Regarding Jellyfin, we host it on a Windows PC but the NVIDIA Shield TV Pro we use also supports hosting and playback. It's possible you may need to enable HW decoding for it in your Dashboard under Playback>Transcoding>Enable hardware decoding for AV1 (checkbox). We don't have a single device that supports AV1 HW decode but software decode has worked well on even our oldest device from 2013.

This was my very first encode, and you can tell right away from the codec used and the poor quality through the thumbnails, that it wasn’t great.
It’s nice to look back and see how much I’ve grown since then, and how much better I’ve gotten since I've stopped trying to do bitstarved encodes lol.

It’s something all of us encoding folks should do : look back at the path we’ve taken, evaluate it, and appreciate the progress we’ve made.
