It's not an upscale, because there is no original "scale" to begin with when you are working with physical film. If you were taking an existing digital copy of said movie (example: a DVD) and then using software to scale it up to 1080p or 4K, then THAT would be an upscale.

Addendum: There ARE a few digitally upscaled releases of classic movies (which do not look good, as is to be expected) but this really only happens if a 35mm reel can't be found/doesn't exist.

Those old movies aren't upscaled with software. The physical film is actually RESCANNED at those higher resolutions. Film is not statically produced at a certain resolution like digital video is.

Rescanning does not equal upscaling. I suggest you look up the difference to educate yourself before spouting bullshit with this kind of confidence again.

Whether its upscaled at home or professionally its still upscaled and the source media being digital or film makes no difference. You cant go on just what you have experienced and believe it is the same. You cant compare whats done professional with expensive equipment to what an amateur does on their computer.

False.  It depends on the editing software used. There are plenty of movies and shows from the 1930s to 1960s that have been upscaled and look good. Stating all upscales look bad shows you dont as much as you claim to. All the old greats have been upscaled.  If what you believe is true all the old Star Wars movies and movies like Blade Runner and the old Indiana Jones would be unwatchable.
