Here's an address to the people who probably know most about converting to avi.  In fact, they do it for you for most of the current shows and provide free download links.  If you leave a comment for staff I'm sure they'd be happy to tell you what they use and/or recommend:

Anyone know a good program to use to convert mkv files to avi? alltoavi just doesn't work with the newer mkv files being made these days. :(

I know Oyatsu from the Tamayura Hitome series they did in their first year.  After that then went Hi10P only and have generally done one or two new titles per season, such as:

Ginga is a joint with Doremi-Subs who do/did the Precure/Pretty Cure franchise and the Ojamajo Doremi series.  Doremi does the translation, Oyatsu does the rest.  Ginga is their first 8-bit encode in a while as part of their agreement with Doremi.

You may already know this, but UTW and other fansubs recommend:
"If you experience flashing subs or lag while playing back on Windows using a Dshow Player (not VLC or Mplayer), then we highly recommend that you update to the latest build of xy-VSFilter, which is very simple to install and will dramatically improve the efficiency of softsub rendering."

this thing lags like crazy... subs are decent enough to watch

It's 10bit video you need right codecs and player to watch it without artefacts try CCCP codec pack and watch in MPC or i watch in Korean Daum player.

I generally browse with ad blockers enabled (plus a whole heap of other blockers) so I wouldn't notice, but I suppose that's somewhat a concern.
I've heard of reports of some hosts causing virus warnings due to certain ad scripts as well.

Those concerned may want to look into ad blocking if it's an issue, is all I can really suggest. Others must simply be dirty perverts and we must condition their minds with kinky 2D action.

But a full titled torrent for this is already at Nyaa, with 1200 downloads and 71 seeders.  So who and why this one?

Ouch!  All that downloading makes me feel bad, so:  

1. I looked around a bit and found there exists one ass file for one movie/special:

Detective Conan - Movie Archive/Lupin III vs Detective Conan/(Anime) Lupin Sansei vs Meitantei Conan [09.03.27] (1280x720 x264 AAC).ass

It is in this monster torrent of more than 600 Conan titles, at the bottom of the list:

Also, near the top of this list one of the movies was listed as an "International Edition".  That could mean R1 softsubs, or just what someone decided to call a DCTP hardsub.

Unfortunately, I can't run torrents at my current location.  This one movie/special (Lupin/Conan) was a join project with Frostii (website gone) who softsubbed it.

2. Small comfort, but since altering the data for lossy-compressed video necessarily degrades the image quality, if you hold onto any raws and can ever add softsubs you should have somewhat better video than the DCTP release.  A little brighter, a little less fuzzy perhaps.  For any BD image files you have of course it will be super nice.

Subrip can rip Hardsubs,it is tedious and not 100% accurate and needs a lot of spell checking and other QC editing afterwards .DCTP really don't need to hardsub and are assholes for not sharing the work they have done.

There are no fansub ass files with DCTP projects.  This group hardsubs only, meaning the text has been "burned" onto the video image.  Ass files are separate text files with timing values for softsubs to overlay on an unaltered video image.  I can think of only three reasons a group would do hardsubs these days:
1. To maintain compatibility with the earliest episodes of a long running series
2. To be playable on lower end hardware
3. If you didn't want others to easily take your hard work and slap their name on it.

I have no idea which, if any, of these are DCTP's reasons.

If you wanted to create softsubs, just watch the movie and type all of the subtitles you see into a text file then import it into AegiSub and add timing for each one to appear and change along with any specialty characters like signs and menus.  It might take you 10 hours.  Maybe less.  Oh, and then post your ass files here, please.

The sound file is missing on this one so expect a v2 sometime, but none yet on their website.  Until then, the 720p version of this episode has it's sound file intact, so if you can play 720p use this one until/unless a v2 arrives, which may take a little while due to holidays:

Slightly larger filesize might help to preserve the video quality. Look at the screenshots.

Agreed. But you can't deny first episode need to preserve the grains, that's why the file is so big.
Check out Atoz release, though it's 8-bit and video slightly not sharp compared to Dmonhiro's (At least it's not ordered chapters).
