AV1's better than H.265 at low bitrates, like billion times better, but what it's missing is compatibility.. it's still too hard on the device and has too many issues with decoding. H.264's still the best to go with as of 2025 and probably for a few more years.

It's unfair to say that AV1's not taking off though, Youtube uses it widely (for example) with a VP9 fallback version for devices who can't play AV1 and it works fine... So never say never.

Most of the newer players can stream AV1, it's not hard to add the codec to the hardware especially since it is free.

My media player software is from 2016 and it plays 264/265 and it can't play av1 smoothly so obviously av1 is bad, so I'll tell everyone not to use it.

My house is about 25 years old now and it's still a modern house even though some of the building techniques and specs have changed since then.
