Comment in [Ai-kun] Ranma 1-2 (2024) - 06 (1080p).mkv
10/11/2024 05:44 — Anonymous: "Nino"

3.
Netflix translation: "My Ranma, please accept this."
AI translation: "Ranma-sama, please accept this."
Original Japanese: "乱馬さま これを"

Netflix's substitution of the honorific '-sama' with the possessive 'My' represents a fundamental misunderstanding of Japanese social dynamics. The honorific '-sama' conveys deep respect and social deference, while 'My' suggests intimate possession - these concepts are diametrically opposed in their social implications. This error is particularly egregious given that even casual anime viewers now understand basic honorifics and their significance in Japanese social hierarchy. Such a substitution not only misrepresents the character's intended tone but completely inverts the power dynamic being expressed in the original dialogue.

4.
Netflix translation: "I'm not a fan."
AI translation: "Eek! That woman gives me the creeps!"
Original Japanese: "いっ!あの女 苦手あっ"

The disparity between translations here is striking. While the AI translation takes some creative liberty, it effectively captures the emotional weight and contextual implications of 'nigate' (苦手) - a term expressing discomfort or aversion. The AI's interpretation better conveys the character's visceral reaction and maintains the emotional authenticity of the scene. Conversely, the official translation's 'I'm not a fan' feels notably understated and fails to convey the immediate distress evident in both the original Japanese expression and the character's visual presentation. This demonstrates how sometimes a more interpretative but contextually aware translation can better serve the narrative than a strictly literal one.

5.
Netflix translation: "Akane, I pray for your safety during the match."
AI translation: "Well then, Akane-kun, try not to get hurt in the match!"
Original Japanese: "じゃ あかねくん 試合でケガをせぬように!"

The official translation's use of 'pray' unnecessarily elevates and formalizes a straightforward expression of concern. The original Japanese simply conveys a casual well-wish about avoiding injury (ケガをせぬように), which the AI translation accurately captures with its natural, conversational tone. This is how localizers inject unwarranted gravity into mundane exchanges, distorting the authentic character dynamics and casual atmosphere of the original dialogue.

150 posts of 2 or 3 people arguing whether fans subs or Ai subs are better? I wouldn't call that intelligent at all. More like idiotic. There is no point to it and they couldve each made one posts each instead of arguing over something stupid. None of the subbers don't give a rats ass what a couple of idiots have to save about subs here. Theyed difinitely fit in the crazy poltical forums ... 100s over posts saying literally nothing.

Yes they are, what the fuck are you talking about?

MTL = Machine Translation
AI = Artificial Intelligence

AI are computers. Computers are machines. Therefore, AI is still machine translation. Not that hard to understand.

The only people who are excited for AI translations are:
- turbo autistic "god damn woke burgerified localization official subs!!! i want literal translations, all romaji names, honorifics, and TL notes plastered on screen every 3 seconds!!!"
- ESLs like you who don't know English or Japanese who seem to really fucking love shitty English subtitles, constantly use MTL tools to shit them out, and release them, unironically having such a low bar for quality and thus thinking they are good enough for everyone, even fluent English speakers

Also the model that is arguably more censored and anal about "ethics" than GPT is, and is much more likely to shut down and refuse to help you.

AI has no business translating anime. I'd rather have fansubbers keep anime piracy alive, than let a shitty translation become the norm on torrent sites.

I've used Claude 3.5 and it's shit. Not sure what you're on about. I've attempted to use AI for my own translating and fan-subbing purposes and it's only come out worse when I've inputting scripts and compared notes. AI isn't good enough for translating anime, it's still very crude and infantile. I'd rather trust my fansubbing colleagues than Claude. Please go learn Japanese instead. It's a better investment.

GPT4 is not a good model for translation for many reasons. It doesn't keep context, gets lost in longer texts, and often hallucinates.
There are much better options for translation and programming. Like Claude 3.5. In addition, the prompt to translate can't just be “translate this from language A to language B.” Oh hell no. You need to specify exactly how you want the translation to look, how it should treat proper names, you need to clearly specify that it should keep the whole thing natural-sounding, and ask it to do proofreading after translation.
Of course, the subject is more complex than what I wrote. I have tried to translate various things (such as movies for the family). Claude can take, for example, the entire script from Aegisub and translate it as a whole while preserving the syntax of that standard, that way he also knows the whole context, not just individual lines. There are different techniques, for example, you can ask him to take notes after each episode and then for the next episode you include those notes. This helps maintain the continuity of the story, the phrases used, etc.
AI is already ready for translations. It's just that GPT4 is no longer a good model, especially for programming and translation.
Though, I have not yet been able to achieve such good results as these subtitles above, but I am convinced that it is just a matter of the right prompt.
AI haters are really half-wits.

I'm also learning japanese and every single time I MTL'd (GPT 4) japanese CCs I got the most robotic, stiff, unnatural, and at time straight up wrong subtitles imaginable. AI isn't there yet and blaming prosubbers isn't the way to go either. OP and all of his split personalities need to quiet the fuck down.

I don't know about the guy you were replying to, but I'm learning Japanese. In fact, I can watch most series entirely in Japanese if Japanese subtitles are available. I can say in all honesty that these AI subtitles (at least the specific ones mentioned here - I don't know what kind of witchcraft the creator of these used, other subtitles done by AI didn't even come close to the level presented here) are much better than the ones Netflix has given, so it's a major upgrade, so I don't understand your (and other AI haters') whining. Why don't you learn Japanese yourself, then you'll see that you're the cretin here?

Let me join in, you are fucking donkies, of course AI will get better and the Fan sub shit whaterver club will get tired of translating. Every thing has its pros and cons, and even with AI translating, will have times that it will be corrected by some random dude in some hardcore fan club or some shit like that. There are countless episodes of animes that got translated based on what the translator thought it was the best adaptation of the idea or just folowing some personal belive, and of course there is the AI tranlation the sounds wired and do not relate to the idea of what is showning on the screen. But in the end we just want to get some free stuff with the best quality.

The whole transgender thing is mostly just an effect of mental health issues/autism spectrum disorder, anyways. Rather than unconditionally let people mess with their own bodies in the name of "being inclusive and accepting", we should be focusing on more mental health support, to understand why they believe that pretending to be another gender is going to magically solve all of their problems, and give them other avenues of supporting their mental health

So if I threw the script into Google Translate and then just added some asspulled TL notes you'd automatically prefer the Google Translate subs because you like seeing TL notes on screen?
We fixed and uploaded the v2 for this episode.
